The purpose of this translation is to translate Hofmannsthal into an Italian which tries to returns the Austrian author to his language. In the past, Hofmannsthal has been translated by using a precious and archaic Italian, too close to the original language. This makes difficult to convey the real message of the author into the target language. For this reason, it is here proposed a new translation of the Briefe des Zurückgekehrten (1907-1908). The title already shows the approach just described: no longer Lettere del rimpatriato (as in Gabriella Bemporad's translation), but Lettere del ritorno, with a shift from the adjective used as noun to a simple noun, in a "natural" output of the German title. This avoids the "hyper-interpretation" of the title with the use of the word "homeland", in order to better represent the return and research of a cosmopolitan half Austrian and half German who, after a bitter criticism of the European world, begins to find himself thanks to the discovery of van Gogh.
