The purpose of the study on the San Giovanni’s catacombs in Syracuse, is the knowledge of the hypogeal patrimony by the integrate digital surveying (3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, direct surveying) for a project compatible to the identity of places. In the 70s, the site has suffered disastrous demolitions due to building speculations which had gutted, with foundations of high multifamily buildings, part of the geo-morphological asset. All this has been caused by the negligence and lack of knowledge of the hypogeal patrimony, which has strong cultural and landscape value. For this purpose, it is proposed a project of riqualification of the areas above the catacombs, today destined to private, wild areas, on which bring to light the hypogeal rooms and paths by an upside down reading made by waterways and lights lines. It is proposed an open space that makes visible the invisible, the hidden – “the garden of memory” – in order to tell the history of the location, by improving its usability and increasing the values of the distinctive elements that make it World Heritage Site.
