Abstract The villa del Casale, a Unesco Heritage site since 1997, located in the territory of Piazza Armerina near Enna, with its influx of about 320.000 annual visitors, is ay yhe top of the museum in Sicily. The perfect state of health of the mosaics of the rooms and the planimetric shape of the entire site is the major attraction of this antique residence. In recent years it has been the subject of several studies, that have examined various aspects, supported by surveys carried out with laser scanner, photogrammetry, and direct method, according to the specificity of the examined parts. In the present study we will give the first of the important results of two special environments: the room of palestriadi o the room of fanciulle in bikini, and the peristyle in front of the room trichora, the latter because of the peculiarity of its geometry. The survey directly addressed, first environment, has been deepened and developed decorative and formal apparatus with Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques, so that over the 3D environment perception, the rich mosaic floor vision developed through the mesh and texture, as well as the part of the frescoes still present along the walls. The SFM’s triclinic processing was compared with a previous survey with 3D laser scanner. The result obtained as a result of subsequent optimizations and refinements made it possible to arrive at a good definition of the detail, and to consider this instrument of representation, for its low cost and easy to use, a valid tool for integration with other surveying techniques.

Abstract The villa del Casale, a Unesco Heritage site since 1997, located in the territory of Piazza Armerina near Enna, with its influx of about 320.000 annual visitors, is ay yhe top of the museum in Sicily.
