The paper presents the PhD thesis, at the first year of its development, about the study of technical-constructive characteristics of historic bell towers, with the aim to support the empirical structural analysis for the seismic vulnerability assessment of such highly valuable buildings. After a preliminary study of recurring damage mechanisms, the research aims to analyse building techniques and lability due to geometric configurations, construction stages, wrong restorations or degradations that affect the functional-static behaviour of masonry. The thesis proposes a census and a typological classification of the historic bell towers in the Etna area. The next stage will also be a detailed study of emblematic cases, compared with the same building typology in Castilla y León, in order to verify whether the method of lability investigation could be considered as valid and common. The paper outlines the empirical method principles, the main recurring damage mechanisms in bell towers and the existing literature about the study of these slender structures. Finally, this article presents the first results of the census in the Etna area and introduces an original case study that eases some considerations about building techniques and damage mechanisms.
