This work discusses the opportunities offered by the current 3D-survey and representation techniques in domes investigation, especially when archival documents (e.g. drawings or models) are available. The comparison between high-resolution surveys and historical documents allows elaborating novel hypothesis about the design and implementation of domes and to expand knowledge on the role of the project in the different execution phases. This methodology has been applied on two XVIII-century domes located in Eastern Sicily.
