The spreading of generation systems based on Renewable Energy Sources (RES) interfaced by power electronics into the power systems reduces the intrinsic inertia of the system and consequently the frequency stability. At the same time increasing the penetration of generating systems base on RES, the amount of connected conventional units will reduce during periods of high wind and/or solar power production. By removing conventional units the system also loses their contribution to the stability of the system. In this context, it is becoming increasingly important for the Indipendent System Operators (ISOs) to evaluate possible solutions to cope with low inertia power systems. In this study, referring to a modified 14-bus IEEE test system, conventional (no RES are involved), techniques applicable to thermoelectric power plants are evaluated.
