Abstract

BTV - Brick Tiled Vault is the prototype of a brick vault (bóveda tabicad) building in self-construction by the students of the Special Architectural Didactic Structure of the University of Catania. The constructive technique adopted re-proposes the concept of 'cohesive structures' developed by Rafael Guastavino and his son at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The first brick surfaces (capas) laid without the aid of ribs with quick-setting mortar on this first folio (capas) the successive layers of bricks are placed, laid with cement mortar. The generated texture of the 'offset' of the joints increases the structural performance of the system. Arches, vaults and brick domes are the constructive elements used by the students for experimenting the innovative use of traditional materials and technologies according to an 'unconventional' model of formation. The first phase of the Laboratory foresees the realization of a vault and a dome model in 1: 4 scale. This activity is followed by the 1: 1 scale construction of the bóveda tabicad.

La prima fase del Laboratorio prevede la realizzazione di un modello di volta ed uno di cupola in scala 1:4. A questa attività segue la realizzazione in scala 1:1 della bóveda tabicad.
