Taking a cross-linguistic perspective to the analysis of original cinematic speech, this book examines the dialogues of English and Italian films with the objective of assessing their degree of lexico-grammatical and phraseological comparability. The data under investigation come from the Pavia Corpus of Film Dialogue, which is approached from different methodological angles (3-grams, 4-grams, dispersion) via the corpus analysis toolkit WordSmith. The book identifies both general and local levels of similarity between the language of English and Italian films, interpreting them as evidence of the stability of film dialogue as a register.

Abstract

Taking a cross-linguistic perspective to the analysis of original cinematic speech, this book examines the dialogues of English and Italian films with the objective of assessing their degree of lexico-grammatical and phraseological comparability. The data under investigation come from the Pavia Corpus of Film Dialogue, which is approached from different methodological angles (3-grams, 4-grams, dispersion) via the corpus analysis toolkit WordSmith. The book identifies both general and local levels of similarity between the language of English and Italian films, interpreting them as evidence of the stability of film dialogue as a register.
