In the XX century, the town of Marignane has been overwhelmed by a huge economic growth that attracted workers from abroad. Following the abandonment of the historic centre by its original population, the social transformation was accompanied by an increasing decay of the buildings. At present, the old town is inhabited by foreigners and a part of it is inaccessible for safety reasons. Restoring a heart to Marignane became a major objective in order to give it an identity other than that of a satellite town in Marseille’s metropolitan area.
