I saggi raccolti in questo volume indagano i meccanismi di inclusione ed esclusione sociale delle élites nel mondo romano, quali emergono dalle basi documentarie e dalla tradizione manoscritta. Nella ricostruzione delle dinamiche di mobilità - ascesa, affermazione, declino - di alcune famiglie di senatori, cavalieri e curiali di particolare prestigio attestati fra prima età imperiale e Tarda Antichità, non si smarrisce mai il filo rosso del duttile e potente pragmatismo romano di governo capace di escogitare e modellare criteri e strumenti giuridici e ideologici tali da garantire consenso e longevità al più potente impero dell' antichità classica.
