On the occasion of the seismic event of 1693 that struck the Val di Noto, many inhabited centers of eastern Sicily were destroyed. Some communities abandoned the affected sites, going to build new centers elsewhere. The emblematic cases are: Avola, Noto, Sortino. Other communities made different decisions such as Catania and Acireale. The city of Catania reduced to rubble, maintains the pre-existing site, the decision is determined by the fact that the fortified wall is unharmed. But in the "reusable" of the city, the hegemonic and subaltern cities are redesigned, assigning different commercial values to the soils and tracing the roads of "governance". The new road direction will coincide with the development of the new aedifying direction, the new architectural emergencies will not have roots with the pre-earthquake city. The city of Acireale following the earthquake, will maintain the site and the location of the emblematic architectures, confirming the centrality of the node of the cathedral square, from which the development of the hegemonic city and the subaltern city will continue and be confirmed. Different cities united and canceled by a calamitous event, redesign the "reuso" and the rebirth with different visions, but repeating the urban, social and cultural model of the city. The present research of which we give the first signs, develops through: urban design, architectural design, surveys performed with different methodologies and techniques, historical maps, hermeneutics, comparison of different models of reuse of post-earthquake reconstruction.
