The paper investigates the progressive “loss of historical centrality” in the small and medium towns of Sicily. Growing dynamics of demographic decline contribute to increase the gap between coastal areas and the fragile inner part of the island, and between ancient and the more recently built-up environment, which are subject to uncontrolled expansion. The study aims to examine the issue of the marginalization of the historic centres, the ongoing attempts of regeneration and their impact on the historic heritage according to visions that are not always consistent with the preservation of their material authenticity.

Abstract

The paper investigates the progressive “loss of historical centrality” in the small and medium towns of Sicily. Growing dynamics of demographic decline contribute to increase the gap between coastal areas and the fragile inner part of the island, and between ancient and the more recently built-up environment, which are subject to uncontrolled expansion. The study aims to examine the issue of the marginalization of the historic centres, the ongoing attempts of regeneration and their impact on the historic heritage according to visions that are not always consistent with the preservation of their material authenticity.
