The study of the ceramics, conducted in the first instance on the side of thr philological and iconographical analysis, has led us to broaden our investigation to include problems relating to the distribution route of Attic ceramics in the western area, with the consequent framing of the same in the dynamics of historical, economic and commercial events. In addition, the analysis of the subjects of these vases, eminently destined for rich burials, which the Peuceti purchasers seem to have favoured among those who travelled along the Adriatic route, constitutes a key that allows us to approach the codes of the Peuceti aristocracy, which must have been in some way reflected in the images that decorated the selected specimens. Certainly predominant among the mythical and divine figures is Dionysus and his thiasos of Satyrs and Maenads, nor are images of the divine symposium of Semele's son with his bride Ariadne absent. The insistent presence of the god of wine, even in favour of the more generic chariot or symposium scenes, suggests, on the part of the vase buyers, a religious and therefore salvific interpretation of these vases, whose funerary function is certain. Among the heroes, one stands out in the first place, Heracles, protomystes hero of the Eleusinian Mysteries, but also the figure who most of all embodied in his mythical story the initiatory path towards the attainment of the immortal dimension. But there is certainly no lack of scenes of thysiai, of athletic agonies, of even heroic monomachies in which the Magna Graecia nobles must have recognised themselves.

Abstract

This volume relates to the study of the Jatta Collection of Ruvo di Puglia -which was entrusted to me for publication by the Accademia dei Lincei- which takes us back to the Magna-Greek area and in particular to Peucezia. If, in fact, in many respects the Apulian burials of the 6th to 4th centuries B.C. reflect a society firmly anchored in its own traditions as regards fighting techniques, clothing or even the typology of the burials, it is undeniable, however, that the Peuceti were pleased to display a particular predilection for painted Attic ceramics as well as a good knowledge of Greek mythical and iconographic heritage.
