Our contribution focuses on 13th-century architecture in Southern Lazio with particular reference to the monastic abbeys of Fossanova (1208) and Casamari (1217). Their reconstruction inaugurated in the province of Campagna and Marittima a new trend that, by welcoming architectural models experimented by the Cistercians monks in Burgundy (France), distanced itself from the architecture promoted by the popes in the ecclesiastical buildings of Rome, still influenced by early Christian artistic language. Fossanova and Casamari and the renewal of regional architectural culture they triggered are the focus of recent works by a team of scholars from the Sapienza University of Rome, aimed at compiling a systematic repertory of ecclesiastical and civil buildings constructed or significantly transformed in Southern Lazio (Ferentino, Amaseno, Anagni, Sezze, Sora, etc.) during the 13th century. Therefore, the aim of this contribution is to focus on some preliminary reflections on a research in progress.

Abstract
Therefore, the aim of this contribution is to focus on some preliminary reflections on a research in progress.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
