Tra medicina, religione e magia: una rilettura della storia della Sicilia antica

Since the foundation of the first Greek colonies, the history of ancient Sicily has been characterized by a peculiar relationship with medicine. In this field, as or perhaps more than in others, the centrality in the Mediterranean made the island a place of exchange of empirical knowledge and scientific acquisitions, often mixed with magical-religious beliefs and practices, which led to the exploitation of natural resources Sicilian for therapeutic purposes, to record significant progress in the discipline or to create artifacts variously functional to the exercise of medical professions. This contribution aims to re-read the history of ancient Sicily from a normally neglected perspective, with the aim of identifying to what extent some of the events that characterized the history of the island were influenced by the onset of diseases and by prompt or non-intervention of individuals able to use natural ingredients, drugs and magical practices.

Sin dalla fondazione delle prime colonie greche, la storia della Sicilia antica è stata caratterizzata da un peculiare rapporto con la medicina. In questo campo, come o forse più che in altri, la centralità nel Mediterraneo fece dell’isola un luogo di scambio di conoscenze empiriche e acquisizioni scientifiche, non di rado miste a credenze e pratiche magico-religiose, che portarono a sfruttare le risorse naturali siciliane a fini terapeutici, a registrare significativi progressi nella disciplina o a realizzare manufatti variamente funzionali all’esercizio delle professioni mediche. Il presente contributo mira a rileggere la storia della Sicilia antica da una prospettiva normalmente trascurata, con l’obiettivo di individuare in che misura alcuni tra gli eventi che caratterizzarono la storia dell’isola fossero stati influenzati dal sopraggiungere di malattie e dal pronto o mancato intervento di individui in grado di fare ricorso a ingredienti naturali, farmaci e pratiche magiche.
