Imagines artis et antiquae fabulae. Il lavoro artigianale nelle immagini dell’arte romana: Repertori figurativi, tecniche e ideologie

The thesis aims at the collection, study and interpretation of the artisanal iconography in the Roman world, with reference to the main craft classes: ceramics, glass, leather, wood and metals. The period examined goes from the early imperial age to the threshold of late antiquity which corresponds to the peak of this artistic production. The goal is to create a wide-ranging synthesis, a corpus that brings together and orders, by categories, all the artistic representations relating to the manufacturing activities of Roman society, in order to study their formal and stylistic characters and, above all, to identify the elements that they give these representations different meanings and functions. It is not a question of simplistically reading precise illustrations of ancient techniques in these representations, but of declining processes, knowledge, roles and relations of production between the different social categories. Therefore the investigation was articulated on multiple research approaches - historical, philological, archaeological - and oriented to the integrated study of the artefacts, of the behaviors or technical procedures and of the meanings, so as to recognize also the non-material aspects, related, for example, to collective and individual choices and knowledge, to political and social relations within the groups involved in production and to those that were established (and changed over time) between artisans and the ruling class.

Il presente lavoro di ricerca mira alla raccolta, allo studio e all’interpretazione dell’iconografia relativa al lavoro artigianale nel mondo romano, in riferimento alle principali classi artigianali: ceramica, vetro, cuoio, legno e metalli. Il periodo cronologico preso in esame copre, senza soluzione di continuità, gli anni che vanno dalla costituzione del potere imperiale alle soglie della tarda-antichità il quale, di fatto corrisponde all’acme di tale produzione artistica. L’obiettivo è quello di realizzare una sintesi di largo respiro, un corpus che riunisce e ordina, per categorie, tutte le rappresentazioni artistiche relative alle attività manifatturiere della società romana, allo scopo di studiarne i caratteri formali e stilistici e, soprattutto, individuarne gli elementi che conferiscono a tali rappresentazioni significati e funzioni diverse. Non si tratta di leggere semplicisticamente in tali raffigurazioni illustrazioni puntuali di tecniche antiche, ma di declinare processi, saperi, ruoli e relazioni di produzione tra le diverse categorie di persone sociali. Pertanto l’indagine è stata articolata su molteplici approcci di ricerca – storico, filologico, archeologico – e orientata allo studio integrato dei manufatti, dei comportamenti o procedimenti tecnici e dei significati, giungendo a riconoscere anche quegli aspetti non materiali, relativi, ad esempio, a scelte e saperi collettivi e individuali, alle relazioni politiche e sociali all’interno dei gruppi coinvolti nella produzione e a quelle che si instaurarono (e si modificarono nel tempo) tra gli artigiani e la classe dirigente.
