This study aims to explore patent-driven standardization strategies. We consider the multi-mode standardization strategy based on the market and committee combination. Drawing on a large sample of standards, we examine the relationship between patent attributes and 3GPP standardization, distinguishing between SEPs (standard essential patents) and non-SEPs. The results show significant differences in the strategies for standardization of technologies, which include SEPs and Non-SEPs. This study provides strategic insights to large companies on the interaction between property rights and standardization of technologies in regulated markets.
