The paper follows the line of research on the 'relations' between monumental buildings, particularly the monastic complexes, and the urban context and shows the results of a study on the cloisters of 18th-century Catania, with a focus on the former Convent of Santa Caterina al Rosario, now the seat of the State Archives of Catania. At the urban scale, the research considers the possibilities of creating paths of knowledge, promoting the fruition of these remarkable spaces, located between architecture and the city, between public and private, but hidden by imposing curtain walls. By expeditious survey sheets, data were acquired on the degree of usability, accessibility and the state of conservation. At the architectural scale, the cognitive phase has led to the interpretation of critical issues and the identification of actions for the restoration of the historic 'container' and the enhancement of the archives it 'contains', to facilitate the physical and cognitive accessibility of the former Convent. These actions are in line with both one of the goals of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) - M1C3 “Removal of physical and cognitive barriers in museums, libraries and archives to enable wider access to and participation in culture” - and the “Italian Architectural Barriers Elimination Plan (PEBA)”. Three design objectives were thus identified: to improve the knowledge paths, to restore the cloister, and to encourage communication of the architectural, artistic, and archival heritage. The aim is to give the cloister the function of an 'architectural hinge' between the city and the building and a pivot between the new exhibition routes.
