The paper questions the heritagization of the Second World War legacy and the “prospective” role that war remains could play in the recognition of the qualities and even the protection of territories besieged by new threats. The study focuses on the Piazzaforte of Augusta and Syracuse and on its southern part: the Maddalena Peninsula. The strategic importance of the site was closely linked to the possibility of controlling the Gulf of Noto where the invasion of Sicily was launched. The research was not limited to the identification of military remnants, but also addressed the transformations of the territory, which overwent massive industrialization after the war. Part of this heritage that was invisible at first glance has thus re-emerged as a new level of interpretation and narrative.

Abstract
The paper questions the heritagization of the Second World War legacy and the “prospective” role that war remains could play in the recognition of the qualities and even the protection of territories besieged by new threats. The study focuses on the Piazzaforte of Augusta and Syracuse and on its southern part: the Maddalena Peninsula. The strategic importance of the site was closely linked to the possibility of controlling the Gulf of Noto where the invasion of Sicily was launched. The research was not limited to the identification of military remnants, but also addressed the transformations of the territory, which overwent massive industrialization after the war. Part of this heritage that was invisible at first glance has thus re-emerged as a new level of interpretation and narrative.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
