In order to grasp the specificity of women’s writing, it is essential to recon- struct girls’ access to the tools of education: excluded from the study of Latin and Greek, they are exposed more than their male peers to Catholic education, through catechism, edifying readings and choral songs. A reflection on the repre- sentation of Eros and the erotic body in women’s love poetry in the 19th century must therefore adopt an intermedial perspective, exploring the entirety of the cultural experiences offered to girls. The lexicological analysis of selected key words in the production of certain “femmes poètes” (Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Delphine Gay, Renée Vivien and Anna de Noailles) will allow us to measure the transformations in female erotic poetic discourse during the 19th century.
