In this work, the design of smart electromagnetic environments (SEEs) is addressed as an inverse source (IS) problem. The complex scattering phenomena arising within a urban scenario are opportunistically exploited by a 'smart' (i.e., scenario-aware) base-station (BTS) antenna in order to induce on the buildings/obstacles the necessary equivalent currents so that a user-defined target field distribution is achieved in a given (non line-of-sight) region. An illustrative benchmark is shown to verify the effectiveness and the potential of the proposed approach.

Abstract

In this work, the design of smart electromagnetic environments (SEEs) is addressed as an inverse source (IS) problem. The complex scattering phenomena arising within a urban scenario are opportunistically exploited by a 'smart' (i.e., scenario-aware) base-station (BTS) antenna in order to induce on the buildings/obstacles the necessary equivalent currents so that a user-defined target field distribution is achieved in a given (non line-of-sight) region. An illustrative benchmark is shown to verify the effectiveness and the potential of the proposed approach.
