Mancuso’s writing offers a realistic representation of the living conditions of the Sicilian petty bourgeoisie at the turn of the XX century, even if the charge of social protest is stronger and more explicit in it than in the works of realism, as emerged openly in her essayistic writing. This paper investigates narrative production of E. Mancuso, dwelling in particular on her linguistic fabric and assessing her diegetic and syntactic strategies, lexical repertoire and possible interaction of language and dialect.
