The paper explores the theme of sanatoriums built during the Fascist regime in Italy and now disused, together with their associated parks. It summarises the results of interdisciplinary research carried out as a prelude to the design of a landscape architecture proposal for the regeneration of the external areas of the former S. Tomaselli Hospital in Catania and the environmental integration of a new centre of excellence for health technologies. The study of historical and archival sources has helped to recover the memory of an architectural and natural system that has been forgotten and never studied; it has also contributed to the definition of a knowledge framework that, together with the direct analysis of the vegetation and the current state of conservation, has guided the design strategies for the preservation of the original features and the creation of a park capable of promoting spatial, functional and landscape continuity between the various stakeholders of the new campus.
