This study investigates the role of ecomuseums as cultural and social instruments for fostering the participatory valorization of cultural and environmental heritage, with a particular focus on the case of the Simeto Ecomuseum, located in the eponymous valley in Eastern Sicily. The research builds upon a critical review of national and international literature and is informed by an empirical inquiry conducted through two distinct phases of fieldwork: a professional placement at the Azienda Speciale Silvo Pastorale in Troina (EN), and a research residency at the Department of Museology of Lusófona University in Lisbon, Portugal – an institution recognized for its academic leadership in the field of Sociomuseology. Within the theoretical paradigm of Sociomuseology, the ecomuseum is conceptualized as a site of territorial co-construction and active citizenship, where heritage is interpreted through relational and transformative terms. At present, the Simeto Ecomuseum is undergoing a process of identity redefinition, shifting toward collaborative planning practices and educational experimentation. Nevertheless, the analysis reveals persistent structural and organizational challenges that impede its advancement, including institutional fragmentation, limited community engagement, logistical constraints, and underdeveloped territorial networks. Comparative insights drawn from the Portuguese contexts of Mértola, Fundão, and Seixal illustrate successful models of participatory heritage governance, capable of fostering collective identity and social regeneration in peripheral areas. The integration of educational, museological, and community-based practices emerges as central to the sustainability of such projects, offering innovative perspectives also for the Simeto case. This thesis advances a critical reflection on the transformative potential of ecomuseums, underscoring the urgency of reinforcing their institutional legitimacy and territorial embeddedness. Conceived as a dynamic and collectively constructed process, heritage holds the capacity to function as a driver for democratic citizenship education, socio-ecological justice, and sustainable development – provided it is supported by intentional design, enduring participatory engagement, and robust inter-institutional collaboration. Despite its current limitations, the Simeto Ecomuseum constitutes a meaningful laboratory for exploring how heritage can serve as a lever for transformation within marginal territories.
La presente ricerca si concentra sul ruolo degli ecomusei come dispositivi culturali e sociali capaci di promuovere la valorizzazione partecipata del patrimonio culturale e ambientale, con particolare riferimento all’esperienza dell’Ecomuseo del Simeto, situato nella Valle omonima in Sicilia orientale. L’analisi parte da una ricognizione critica della letteratura nazionale e internazionale sul tema e si sviluppa attraverso un’indagine empirica articolata in due fasi di studio sul campo: un tirocinio presso l’Azienda Silvo Pastorale di Troina (EN) e una residenza scientifica presso il Dipartimento di Museologia dell’Università Lusófona di Lisbona, in Portogallo, centro accademico di riferimento per la disciplina della Sociomuseologia. Nel quadro teorico della Sociomuseologia, l’ecomuseo è interpretato come uno spazio di co-costruzione territoriale e di cittadinanza attiva, dove il patrimonio viene inteso in chiave relazionale e trasformativa. L’Ecomuseo del Simeto è oggi oggetto di una ridefinizione identitaria che si orienta verso pratiche progettuali condivise e sperimentazioni educative. Tuttavia, l’analisi evidenzia criticità strutturali e organizzative che ne rallentano lo sviluppo: dalla frammentazione istituzionale alla scarsa partecipazione comunitaria, dalla difficoltà logistica alla debolezza delle reti territoriali. Il confronto con le esperienze portoghesi di Mértola, Fundão e Seixal evidenzia percorsi virtuosi di gestione partecipata del patrimonio, capaci di generare identità collettive e rigenerazione sociale anche in contesti marginali. L’integrazione tra pratiche educative, museali e comunitarie risulta centrale per la sostenibilità di questi progetti, aprendo prospettive innovative anche per il caso simetino. La tesi propone una riflessione critica sulle potenzialità trasformative degli ecomusei, mettendo in luce la necessità di consolidare il loro riconoscimento istituzionale e il loro radicamento territoriale. Il patrimonio, inteso come processo dinamico e condiviso, può divenire strumento per l’educazione alla cittadinanza democratica, alla giustizia socio-ecologica e allo sviluppo sostenibile, a patto che sia supportato da progettualità intenzionali, continuità partecipativa e alleanze interistituzionali solide. L’esperienza dell’Ecomuseo del Simeto, pur con i suoi limiti, rappresenta un laboratorio significativo per interrogarsi su come il patrimonio possa diventare leva di trasformazione nei territori marginali.
