Gli Atti del martirio di sant’Euplo e le Passioni di sant’Agata: una rilettura storica

The distinction between the Acts of the martyrdom of Euplius and the Passions of Saint Agatha presupposes a precise literary and stylistic classification, while also implying a critical evaluation of the authenticity of their respective contents, in so far as the “Acts” are regarded as the original records of the judicial proceedings that led to the martyrdom of Christians, whereas the “Passions” constitute more or less imaginative subsequent reworkings. The present enquiry aims to identify those elements that can be considered unquestionably original and traceable to the trial records, distinguishing them from demonstrably later additions and from statements whose authenticity is more difficult to ascertain. An examination of these texts, subjected to rigorous historical scrutiny, makes it possible to determine which of the (seemingly inconspicuous) details they contain may provide useful evidence for dating the extant redactions; conversely, previously overlooked aspects of the “Passions” narratives preserve unexpected nuclei of historical truth and thereby permit a partial reassessment of this category of sources.

Distinguere tra Atti del martirio di Euplo e Passioni di sant’Agata presuppone una precisa classificazione letteraria e stilistica e sottende anche un giudizio di merito sulla genuinità dei rispettivi contenuti, giacché gli “atti” sarebbero i documenti originali dei processi a seguito dei quali i cristiani vennero martirizzati, le “passioni” le più o meno fantasiose rielaborazioni successive. La mia indagine mira a evidenziare i dati certamente originari e riconducibili ai verbali del processo, distinguendoli dalle aggiunte sicuramente posteriori e dalle affermazioni la cui autenticità è più difficile stabilire. L’esame di questi testi, passati al vaglio della lente storica, consente di individuare quali tra i dettagli (insospettabili) in essi contenuti possano offrire indicazioni utili alla datazione delle redazioni ad oggi pervenute; d’altro canto, particolari inosservati del racconto delle “Passioni” contengono nuclei di verità storica inaspettati e consentono di rivalutare in parte questo genere di documenti.
