Nowadays planning in consolidated city, specially in areas bordering on the historical centre, requires a rigorous analytical phase which has to be included into systemic logics; according to this approach is necessary validate “knowingly” the choices of the design which have to be made at different scales (urban and building scale). Too frequently the cultural heritages are demeaned by a building context that has developed without relationship with them; similarly, the disjointed superfetations compromise both the cultural identity and the structural equilibrium of historical buildings. Impallomeni palace, chosen like emblematic case, is a traditional building built in XIX century and characterized by a very complex constructive history; it is sited in an urban fabric without social and cultural identity. The paper, through this case study, presents the opportunity to think about the possibility to ricreate the genius loci of urban landscape, by means of a “sustainable” refurbishment, operating in an integrated way and combining the needs of the preservation with the economic, environmental and social ones.
