This research belongs to a classic theme dear to the historiographer - continence and ecclesiastical celibacy - too often found within the readings of a confessional nature which seem based on the Scriptures. To prove this thesis is mistaken this study reconsiders the position of Augustine and the African Synod legislature. The complexity and the variety of the ecclesiastical experiences and the standpoints taken demonstrate how the churches of the first century –right up to the times of Augustine – were moving in contexts where the debate was open and the orientation concerning the behaviour and matrimonial condition of the clergy were conditioned by various political, cultural and economic factors.

Abstract
This research belongs to a classic theme dear to the historiographer - continence and ecclesiastical celibacy - too often found within the readings of a confessional nature which seem based on the Scriptures. To prove this thesis is mistaken this study reconsiders the position of Augustine and the African Synod legislature. The complexity and the variety of the ecclesiastical experiences and the standpoints taken demonstrate how the churches of the first century –right up to the times of Augustine – were moving in contexts where the debate was open and the orientation concerning the behaviour and matrimonial condition of the clergy were conditioned by various political, cultural and economic factors.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
