Tempo ed eternità nel Commentario al Parmenide di Damascio

This PhD thesis aims to investigate the different temporal structures that Damascius, the last Diadochus of the Neoplatonic School of Athens, deploys in his Commentary on Plato's Parmenides. To this end, all passages relevant to such an examination were selected and accompanied by an Italian translation and an extensive commentary. The selection was made from the masterful critical edition, consisting of four volumes, edited by Joseph Combès and Leendert Gerrit Westerink (Les Belles, Paris 1997, 1997, 2001, 2003), whose French translation was always taken into account in the translation and commentary work. Before examining the selected passages in detail, however, it was decided to preface the thesis with two introductory chapters on the life of the Neoplatonic philosopher, in order to restore the work to its historical context, and on the structure and content of his entire Commentary on Parmenides. In the second part of the work, on the other hand, a selection of all the passages useful for identifying the temporal structures that oversee all levels of the Neoplatonic physical and metaphysical system is presented, accompanied by a translation (the first in Italian) and an extensive commentary. In closing this abstract, it can be asserted that the study reveals the omnipresence of temporality – even when it is conceived as something pre-temporal and a-temporal, as in the case of eternity – at every ontological level of the Neoplatonic hierarchy of reality; on the other hand, its absence should be noted in all those areas that are non-being either by transcendence or by default, that is, in all those areas superior to being (ineffable principle, one, enads, etc.) or inferior to it (pure matter, absolute nothingness, etc.).

Questa tesi di dottorato ha come obiettivo quello di indagare le diverse strutture temporali che Damascio, ultimo diadoco della Scuola Neoplatonica di Atene, dispiega nel suo Commentario al Parmenide di Platone. A tal fine, si è proceduto ad una selezione di tutti i brani utili a siffatta disamina, corredandoli con una traduzione in lingua italiana e con un commentario disteso. La selezione è stata svolta sulla magistrale edizione critica, composta da ben quattro volumi, curata da Joseph Combès e Leendert Gerrit Westerink (Les Belles, Paris 1997, 1997, 2001, 2003), della cui traduzione in lingua francese si è sempre tenuto conto nel lavoro di traduzione e commento. Prima di esaminare compiutamente i brani selezionati, tuttavia, si è scelto di anteporre, in una prima parte della tesi, due capitoli introduttivi riguardanti la vita del Filosofo Neoplatonico, così da restituire l’opera al contesto storico cui effettivamente appartiene, e struttura e contenuti di tutto il suo Commentario al Parmenide. Nella seconda parte del lavoro, invece, è presentata la selezione di tutti i brani utili al fine di enucleare le strutture temporali che sovrintendono a tutti i livelli dell’impianto fisico e metafisico neoplatonico, accompagnati appunto da una traduzione (la prima in lingua italiana) e da un commentario disteso. In chiusura di questo abstract, è possibile asserire che dallo studio emerge l’onnipervasività della temporalità – anche quando essa è concepita come un che di pre-temporale e a-temporale, come nel caso dell’eternità – ad ogni livello ontologico della gerarchia neoplatonica del reale; d’altra parte, va rilevata la sua assenza in tutti quegli ambiti che sono non-essere o per trascendenza o per difetto, vale a dire in tutti quegli ambiti superiori all’essere (principio ineffabile, uno, enadi, etc.) o inferiori ad esso (materia pura, nulla assoluto, etc.).
