Amphiphilic ZnII Schiff base complexes are Lewis acidic species which exhibit substantial optical variations and a dramatic enhancement of the fluorescence emission, upon axial coordination of a Lewis base. Alkaloids are Lewis bases characterized by a powerful physiological activity and, because of their pharmacological effects, are used as antibacterials (berberine), vasodilators (papaverine), anesthetics (morphine, atropine), antimalarials (quinine), and as stimulant (nicotine, caffeine) or psychoactive (cocaine) drugs, with a consequent considerable interest to medicine and society. Due to this broad range of applications, the development of selective methods for sensitive detection of alkaloids is highly desirable.
