This work gathers together the first results of research carried out on a sample of wine producing companies which have introduced a company quality system under the ISO 9000 regulations. This research aims to look into the methods of adopting the quality system and collect useful information regarding the service offered by the certifying Bodies and the various other players involved in this process. It emerged from the study that the ISO certification is a valid instrument, particularly for wine producing companies in Southern Italy, because it makes the optimization of the production process easier, improves the company’s competitiveness and business relations, bearing in mind the increasing need t work in a globalized market. As for the service offered by the various consultant figures and Bodies throughout the different phases of the certification procedure, while being mainly positive, did indicate the need to improve professionalism and competence (multi-disciplinarity of the figures) as well as reduce the distance between the companies and consultant and certification Bodies in order to make relations easier and keep down costs.
