This work highlights the importance of the visual relationship established between observer and surrounding landscape. Often this landscape is perceived and appreciated through everyday byways and sights which are really only a part of the view. But there are places from which the same landscape may be observed from unexpectedly interesting but different perspectives. Putting a wind farm in a previously inaccessible area may create an opportunity for locals and tourists to discover fresh vistas which could lead to new away from the usual pathways. So, it would be useful to put forward and apply an objective method to identify those sites which could become ‘landmark belvederes’. By analysing visual relationships through a classification of wind farm towers into classes of positive and negative visibility, a Visually Interesting Vista Map has been created which offers a good starting point for defining design strategies to exploit and promote often marginal areas both from an economic and social point of view.
