Abstract
Great and constant attention is paid to disciplinary issues in the council documentationof Late Antique Gaul particularly those which define the structure of the hierarchy of theclergy. The norms which aimed at a more rigorous control of the sexuality of those whoalready belonged to the upper echelons of the clergy and those who aspired to belong tothem can be found within this framework. By assessing the canons written on this issue inthis period of history (IV –V centuries) within this limited geographical area, we can cometo a greater general comprehension of the process, which is anything but linear, which willlead later to the enforcement of celibacy involving the entire West.Furthermore, the ways in which this issue is taken up and reformulated time after time bythe various Gallic seats and the evaluation of how the decretals laid down by the Romansee on the issue is received in the Gallic territory give insight into the state of interrelationsamong the bishops of this region as well as between them and the Roman see.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
