Abstract

In preindustrial constructive tradition exists a close relation between nature and material culture of a community. The ancient workers were able to use in a expert way the materials existing in a territory according to a consolidate knowledge. As regard the external plasters, just because considered as sacrifice surface, the fine art was transmitted mostly by means of experience on building yard. A research unit, working in the Osservatorio delle Patologie Edilizie, is dealing with the reading in a technical-constructive key of the traditional plasters of the historical centre of Catania and the knowledge of their performances. But this isn’t enough; however the image of the historical centre change quickly because are putting on the building market pre-mixed plasters to spread on any masonry. We have wondered if, using traditional prescription, is possible to produce a pre-mixed plasters compatible with the existing ones keeping a competitive price. By means of a collaboration with the building industries we are doing an experimentation on pre-mixed plasters having as aggregate the azolo (volcanic building material). This research is aimed towards verify the compatibility with the traditional existing ones and the constructive viability (mix workability, constructive techniques for renders).
