Controversy and debate over sexual matters among Western churches (IV century)

This paper analyses relations between the bishops of Rome and the bishops of the most important western seats, in particular, Gaul, Africa and Spain, at a time when Roman primacy was in the making, when the first decretals were emanated and papal legislative documents were modelled on imperial decrees. The research embraces a span of time which goes up to the VI century and so embraces the most significant decretals in the collection of Dionysius Exiguus (Dennis the Small)which was the most important collection of norms in the western world. Through examination of these texts, which document conflict and debate on themes of a sexual nature, it becomes clear how political reasoning and relations among ecclesiastical and non ecclesiastical powers operated and what this meant as regards establishing guidelines and controlling customs.

Il lavoro analizza i rapporti tra vescovo di Roma e vescovi delle principali sedi occidentali -Gallia, Africa e Spagna, soprattutto- a partire da un momento decisivo per la formazione della primazia romana: quando vengono emanate le prime decretali, i documenti legislativi papali modellati sui decreti imperiali. L'indagine abbraccia un arco di tempo che va fino alla più importante collezione normativa diffusa in Occidente, quella di Dionigi il Piccolo (VI sec.), che raccoglie le principali tra queste decretali. Attraverso questi testi, che documentano contrasti e dibattiti su temi di carattere sessuale, si evidenzia come le ragioni della politica e i rapporti tra poteri -anche quello civile, non solo quelli ecclesiastici- operino in materia di orientamento e di controllo dei costumi.
