The results of a numerical study on the oscillatory flow around a circular cylinder close to a plane wall are here described to the aim of providing informations about the vorticity dynamics and the loads on pipelines. It is shown that in the case of a cylinder placed far away from the wall, vortex pairs are generated at every half cycle. When the cylinder is close to the wall, the generation of vortex pairs is suppressed and only one vortex is ejected every half a cycle. In this last case the time averaged transverse force is directed upwards.

Abstract
