Abstract

The architecture of a knowledge-based system designed to detect the occurrence of an earthquake and predict its effects is described. The system consists of two modules. The first module processes the instrumental seismic signals to detect the earthquake and compute its hypocenter. The second module foresees macroseismic effects by processing geological data and information regarding previous earthquakes stored in a database. The query language Prolog is used.
