The aim of this paper is to analyze the path and highway layers of the PROWAY architecture proposed by IEC, pointing out how it is possible to extend the HDLC protocol to perform such layers. Both communication and fault aspects are analyzed and a formalization of such functions is given in order to clearly show the data highway behavior.
