In this paper the response surface method is used to distinguish the state of the structure by the form of the fitted response surface. A statistical methods of discriminant analysis was recently proposed to detect damage states. It is discussed in view of civil engineering applications. The specific idea developed in this paper is a procedure for inferring from such a comparison not only the damage, but also its location.
