The authors report the results of greenhouse tests carried out in Sicily in order to assess the effectiveness of sublimedsulphur against the major pests of tomato (tomato russet mite, whiteflies, and tomato borer); also, possible side effects onthe predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) were investigated. This technique of sulphur distribution, obtained with electricaldevices, has major advantages over traditional applications, mostly in terms of greater activity against harmful agents, lower labor costs for distribution, use of small amount of sulphur and reduction of residues on fruits. The results show an appreciable action in containing pests and the noticeable effects were detected against thetomato russet mite which was totally controlled; a satisfactory efficacy against whiteflies was recorded especially forthe consequent reduction of viral infections. With respect to the tomato moth Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), the controltechnique based on the exclusive use of sublimated sulphur did not show significant differences compared to thethesis with the sublimed sulphur and bioinsecticides and to the one treated only with bioinsecticides according to farmstandards. Field monitoring showed that the mirid N. tenuis, after being released in the greenhouse, did not modifyits rate of growth due to the sublimation of sulphur.
