al-ʽAllāma al-Ḥillī, in the 14th century, was the first to state explicitly that a jurist’s competences cannot be considered complete unless they include the study of the discipline called ʽilm rijāl al-ḥadīth. Abstract

al-ʽAllāma al-Ḥillī, in the 14th century, was the first to state explicitly that a jurist’s competences cannot be considered complete unless they include the study of the discipline called ʽilm rijāl al-ḥadīth. In fact he says that without ascertaining the transmitter’s reliability or, conversely, proving his weakness, no qualified work of interpretation of the transmitted sources of the law can be carried on. In this paper I examine the work written by al-Ḥillī and devoted to the ‘science of transmitters’ titled Khulāṣat al-aqwāl fī maʽrifat al-rijāl.
