A research was carried out in a plain area of South Italy (Sicily), with the aim of evaluating the crop productivity of sweet and fiber Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in terms of biomass, when cultivated as second crop in the Mediterranean environment. Twenty genotypes in all were sown on the 13th of July, 2009, and among fiber and sweet types in three different levels of Evapotraspiration (ETc) restoration: 100, 50 or 0% (I100 = fully irrigated, I50 = PRD, I0 = dry control, respectively) were applied. In I50 , the water was supplied by using the PRD (Partial Root Drying) technique. The fresh above ground biomass, on average of genotypes was 54.0 t ha-1 in -1 -1 fully irrigated treatment (I100) , 44.7 t hain (I50) and 32.6 t hain (I0) while the dry matter. Yield was equal to 13.7 t -1-1 -1 ha, 12.0 t haand 8.6 t haunder I100, I50 and I0 regimes respectively. Irrespective of water regime, yield ranged -1 -1 between 8.7 t ha(Sorgo AUS) and 15.5 t ha (Sugargraze and Makueni Local 06). The PRD (Partial Rootzone Drying) application allowed to obtain a higher WUE compared to I100 treatment.
