Like the vast majority of European cities, the historic urban fabric of Catania (Italy) consists of many churches, being a tangible testimony to historical memory. Today many of these temples are forgotten and underused. Little or no maintenance and degradation of urban and social fabric, in which the churches are placed, are exacerbating the courses of their decay. The churches of brotherhoods are a peculiar category of these religious buildings, comparable with each other for genesis, materials, building techniques and interior space too. This huge architectural heritage urgently requires conservation intervention and restoration. We necessarily have to put forward reuse hypothesis, in order to ensure continuous and appropriate heritage enjoyment and use. All of this must respect the formal, material and typological characters of buildings, according to the latest Charters for Restoration. This study proposes a systematic tabulation of Catania churches of brotherhoods, highlighting the knowledge of these buildings as a fundamental requirement for any recovery and protection action. We took out the group of single hall churches and directed the knowledge to acts of compatible reuse.
