Abstract

Since ancient times, the hypogeal constructions have been developed to satisfy the requirements of protection, comfort and resource optimization. Taking advantage of the thermal inertia of the soil, they are usually situated in the geographical areas which are characterized by hot climate in order to ensure a better thermal comfort in the warmer months. The research aims to verify both energy and economic advantages of the underground architectures. An hypogeal building, designed as an extension of an abandoned rural building which is transformed in a residence, has been taken as a case study to evaluate its energy performance and to quantify the benefits of the hypogeal structure by comparing the energy consumption and the costs of realization and management with that of an equal building built above the ground.
