Legislazione conciliare e monachesimo nella Gallia tardo-antica

The essay traces the path of the relations between the ecclesiastical hierarchies and the monastic reality by means of the study of the canon law documentation produced in Gaul between the V and the beginning of the VII centuries and reconstructs its intricate articulated structure. The picture which emerges from the examined sources is seen to be one dominated by a conflict of power between the bishops on the one hand and the monastic framework on the other. Behind this lie the fluctuating situations of the crown and with documented evidence a wider range of conflicting situations at various and transversal levels can be identified but these can rarely be found to have clear and well defined limits. The difficult game of balance that the ‘ strong roles’ put into action and the strategies adopted to gain stability seem to lay the ground for the slow construction of the French nation.

Il saggio ripercorrendo le trame dei rapporti tra gerarchie ecclesiastiche e realtà monastiche attraverso la documentazione canonistica prodotta in Gallia fra il V e l’inizio del VII secolo, ne ricostruisce il tessuto articolato e complesso. Il quadro emergente dalle fonti esaminate si rivela dominato da uno scontro di potere i cui poli si identificano nei vescovi da un lato e nella compagine monastica dall'altro. Sullo sfondo stanno le alterne vicende della corona, e in filigrana è possibile individuare un più ampio ventaglio di situazioni conflittuali a livelli vari e trasversali, i cui fronti risultano raramente segnati da nette linee di demarcazione. I faticosi giochi di equilibrio che i ‘ruoli forti’ mettono in atto e le strategie di stabilità sperimentate sembrano gettare le basi per preparare la lenta costruzione della nazione Francia.
