SVILUPPO E INNOVAZIONE NELL'HITECH IN SICILIA. UN'INDAGINE SULLE IMPRESE ANCORA E SULLE RETI INNOVATIVE NELL'AREA DI CATANIA. INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF HI-TECH ANCHOR FIRMS AND NETWORKS IN SICILY

This research report presents the most salient empirical results obtained by the research work that the FRIDA ("Fostering Regional Innovation and Development Through Anchors and Networks") European team of the Department Impresa Culture e Società in the University of Catania has carried out in the two-year time 2009-2011. The Department Impresa, Culture e Società of the University of Catania has been one of the seven partners of a truly European project that has involved some of the most renown economic-managerial research centers in Europe: the University of Bologna, Italy; the University of Mannheim, Germany; Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, UK; the University of Economics at Katowice, Poland; Grenoble Ecole de Management, France; the National Technical University dell'Ukraina, and as already said the University of Catania. The objective of the FRIDA project was detecting and grasping the determinants of the processes of innovation promotion and regional development through the scrutiny of the signifi cant role that "anchor fi rms" and their local networks are required to perform. The ultimate goal is therefore to consent policy makers at various levels, local, Italian and European, to turnout a more specifi c idea of the importance of these fi rms and their networks for regional development and cohesion, as particularly concerns an industrial hi-tech area located in Sicily: the nanotech Catania area. The volume is organized into two main parts that are written, respectively, in the Italian language and in the English language. The former, in Italian, provides a synthesis of the major aspects that the project has examined and underscores the implications for policy makers. The latter, in English, presents the outcome of the in-depth analyses performed on the nanotech cluster located in the Catania area. In this part, it is possible to appreciate the three phase reconstruction of the hi-tech cluster chronologic evolution and the ego network analysis of the relationships among the actors that are located in it. We also offer a succinct press review of some contributions published in the local papers as concern the presentation of the FRIDA project results, as well as the synthesis of a paper that won the Best Paper Award at the 2010 Sinergie Annual Conference.

Questo rapporto presenta i risultati salienti del lavoro di investigazione effettuato nel biennio 2009-2011 dal team di ricerca europeo FRIDA ("Fostering Regional Innovation and Development Through Anchors and Networks") del Dipartimento Impresa Culture e Società dell'Università degli Studi di Catania. Il Dipartimento Impresa, Culture e Società dell’Università degli Studi di Catania è stato uno dei sette partner del Progetto che ha avuto respiro europeo, dal momento che ha coinvolto alcuni rilevanti centri di ricerca economico-manageriale in Europa: l'Università di Bologna, l'Università di Mannheim, Germania, lo Science Policy Research Unit dell'Università del Sussex, UK, la University of Economics di Katowice, Polonia, la Grenoble Ecole de Management, Francia, la National Technical University dell'Ukraina e, come osservato, l’Università di Catania. Lo scopo del progetto è stato di comprendere le determinanti dei processi di promozione dell'innovazione e dello sviluppo regionale attraverso l'investigazione del ruolo rilevante che le "imprese àncora" e i loro network locali sono chiamati a svolgere. L’obiettivo ultimo è quindi di portare a conoscenza dei policy makers di vario livello, locali, italiani ed europei, l'importanza di tali imprese e dei loro network per lo sviluppo e la coesione regionali con specifi co riferimento ad un'area industriale ad alta tecnologia della Sicilia: l'area catanese della nanoelettronica. Il volume è strutturato in due parti principali che sono redatte, rispettivamente, nelle lingue italiana e inglese. La prima parte, in lingua italiana, contiene una sintesi degli aspetti essenziali che sono stati presi in esame nel corso del progetto e pone in rilievo le maggiori implicazioni per i policy makers. La seconda parte, in lingua inglese, presenta, in modo approfondito, le analisi condotte sul cluster nanotech nell'area catanese. In questa parte è in particolare possibile apprezzare la ricostruzione per fasi dell'evoluzione cronologica del cluster hi-tech e gli esiti della network analysis delle relazioni fra gli attori in esso presenti. Si allega altresì una succinta rassegna stampa di alcuni contributi apparsi sulla pubblicistica locale in merito ai risultati di FRIDA e il compendio di un lavoro che ha ottenuto il Best Paper Award al Convegno annuale di Sinergie 2010
