The study focuses on the use of orgè and thumòs in the historical works of Anna Comnena, Ioannes Kinnamos and Niketas Choniates. In the twelfth century the two terms were used as interchangeable synonyms. However, the three historians, because of reading the classics and lexicography, in many passages demonstrate awareness of different semantic shades of the two words, and plans to use them instrumentally, each in line with both the unique characteristics of their own style, and the narrative approach and purpose of their works.
