Abstract

The Delayed Luminescence (DL) emission from single seed was evaluated and compared with its following germination performance. The relaxation kinetics characteristics of the spectral components correlated to the different germination levels of two lots of watermelon seeds. The results allow proposing DL measurement as a quick, cheap and non-destructive test for seed viability analysis. Worth to note the relevance of these results in the intensive vegetable industry, where seeds with rapid and uniform germination and growth are preferred to improve crop production.
