I viaggi “scientifici” di Galeno e lo sfruttamento delle miniere imperiali

Some passages from two works of the physician Galen of Pergamum (De antidotis and De simplicium medicamentorum temperamentis ac facultatibus) – substantially neglected by scholars and yet of fundamental importance in terms of economic history – offer valuable informations on the existence of an official in charge of administration of the Soli imperial mine in Cyprus (“island of copper”, where Galen probably went in 161-162 A.D.), on the structure of the tunnels, on the functioning of the mining activity and on the employed personnel. Galenic testimony, certainly reliable because it is the result of a scientist’s autopsy, undoubtedly contributes to partially fill a gap of information on mining exploitation in the Roman-imperial era, an aspect which until now has been reconstructed almost exclusively on the basis of juridical sources, that is the Tabulae of Vipasca of the Hadrianic age and the late legislation of the Codex Theodosianus.

Alcuni passi tratti da due opere del medico Galeno di Pergamo (De antidotis e De simplicium medicamentorum temperamentis ac facultatibus) – sostanzialmente trascurati dagli studiosi eppure di fondamentale importanza in termini di storia economica – offrono informazioni preziose sull’esistenza di un funzionario preposto all’amministrazione della miniera imperiale di Soli a Cipro (“isola del rame”, dove Galeno si recò verosimilmente nel 161-162 d.C.), sulla struttura delle gallerie, sul funzionamento dell’attività estrattiva e sul personale impiegato. La testimonianza galenica, sicuramente affidabile perché frutto dell’osservazione autoptica di uno scienziato, contribuisce senza dubbio a colmare parzialmente un gap di notizie sullo sfruttamento minerario in epoca romano-imperiale, aspetto fino ad oggi ricostruito pressoché esclusivamente sulla base di fonti di taglio e contenuto giuridico, ossia le Tabulae di Vipasca d’età adrianea e la tarda legislazione del Codex Theodosianus.
