Both cinema and literature play a key role in the image building of places selected as film locations or settings of successful literary works. «Cinema deals with Sicily because Sicily is Cinema» (Sciascia) , and its representation made through movies does actually meld with reality. Literature has been the primary producer of the stereotyped Island's image bounded to the Sicily-Violence binomial. The Grand Tour travelers have already described a glamorous world, rich in art and history, but also repulsive places, crowded with brigands, instinctive, jealous, and violent people. A recurrent and often captivating representation has consolidated a very specific stereotype of Sicily, mainly linked to the poor and archaic rural world. A certain literature and even cinema at large have fueled the spread of preconceptions about the region: myths, stereotypes, clichés and prejudices did build an image of the island far away from the local experience.
