Chiafura, a cave settlement with many habitations, is probably the most ancient neighbourhood of Scicli, founded in the early Sicilian Bronze Age and inhabited up to the 1950s. It has features of great interest, above all from the historical–anthropological and archaeological points of view. For over fifty years Chiafura has been at the centre of a long and heated debate on its hygiene–habitational conditions and the necessary action to be taken regarding its future. The project regarding the cultural valorization of the area is currently still a tentative one: it was first presented in 2006 by a group of scholars, coming for the most part from the University of Catania, and has be re-proposed by various political movements over the course of the past years. Recently great hope has been expressed for a definitive recovery of this important piece of cultural heritage, which sits within an area already inserted in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
